Scholarly Directories

Directories were the first navigation tools on the web. Classic examples are the Yahoo! Directory and the Open Directory Project. Mentioned below are a few large scientific directories. The advantage of directories is that you are able to browse the resources rather than search for specific items. Directories make a splendid resource when you have time to explore your subject thoroughly.

Infomine http://infomine.ucr.edu/

A broad scholarly directory, developed and supported by the Library of the University of California, Riverside. It contains useful Internet resources such as databases, electronic journals, electronic books, bulletin boards, mailing lists, online library card catalogs, articles, directories of researchers, and many other types of information. There is a selection bias towards American resources.

Internet Scout Report http://scout.wisc.edu/Archives/index.php

The oldest academic directory. The Scout report was created already in 1994, and still continues to come out weekly with a new issue full of interesting Websites. The archives contains nearly 23,000 critical annotations of selected Websites and mailing lists.

Pinakes http://www.hw.ac.uk/libWWW/irn/pinakes/pinakes.html

Pinakes is a directory of academic directories maintained by the Herriot Watts university Library.

Biology browser http://www.biologybrowser.org

BiologyBrowser, produced by Thomson Scientific, is a free web site offering resources for the life sciences information community.

Bioinformatics Link Directory http://bioinformatics.ca/links_directory/

The Bioinformatics Links Directory features curated links to molecular resources, tools and databases. The links listed in this directory are selected on the basis of recommendations from bioinformatics experts in the field. We also rely on input from our community of bioinformatics users for suggestions. Starting in 2003, they have also started listing all links contained in the NAR Webserver and database issues.

Intute http://www.intute.ac.uk/

A general broad scholarly directory in the ranging all science topics. There are 4 main areas: Science & Technology; Arts & Humanities; Social Sciences; and Health & Life Sciences. The database contains just over 100,000 records. Subject specialists select and evaluate the websites in the database and write good summaries of the resources. Standardized keywords from different thesauri, such as the CAB Thesaurus or Mesh Headings are added to the descriptions and facilitate browsing the collections. In 2011 JISC stopped the support for Intute, the information is still there, but the site is no longer updated.

The currently value of Intute are the excellent subject specific training training guides to improve your web search skills.
